In an earlier posting, I expressed my suspicions about the nature of the European Union project: in whose interest is it? The post rested on the assumption that it was an undemocratic project created to further the reigning neoliberal economic order.
I have just received a commentary published in Le Monde Diplomatique that reinforces my suspicions. Funnily enough, in the same issue, there is another article, by Ignacio Ramonet, that supports the idea of Turkey joining the EU, demolishing the objections that have often been raised in by Europeans to Turkey's entry. It concludes: "For the other major countries of the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey’s membership will provide a concrete message of hope, peace, prosperity and democracy." How these ideals can be realized under what the first commentary claims is a fundamentally undemocratic political order, remains to be seen.
